Billy Idol - Idol Songs: 11 of the Best (1988)

Imagen

After getting his start with '70s punks Generation X, singer Billy Idol left the band for a solo career in the early '80s. An early MTV darling (with his peroxide-blond spiky hair and "rough boy" looks), Idol merged his punk roots with top-40 hooks, resulting in several '80s rock classics: Dancing With Myself, White Wedding, Eyes Without A Face, Mony Mony...

Idol Songs: 11 of the Best is a compilation album by Billy Idol, released in 1988. It was reissued with a different track order in 2003 as Essential Billy Idol.

Track listing

1. White Wedding
2. Hot in the City
3. Rebel Yell
4. Eyes Without a Face
5. Catch My Fall
6. Mony Mony
7. To Be A Lover
8. Sweet Sixteen
9. Flesh for Fantasy
10. Don't Need A Gun
11. Dancing With Myself

The Alan Parsons Project - I Robot (1977)

Imagen

I Robot is a progressive rock album recorded by The Alan Parsons Project, engineered by Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson in 1977. It was released by Arista Records in 1977 and re-released on CD in 1984 and 2007. It was intended to be based on the I, Robot stories written by Isaac Asimov, and actually Woolfson spoke with Asimov, who was enthusiastic about that. But the rights had already been granted to a TV/movie company, so the album's title was altered slightly by removing the comma, and the theme and lyrics were made to be more generically about robots rather than specific to the Asimov universe.

The cover inlay reads: "I ROBOT... THE STORY OF THE RISE OF THE MACHINE AND THE DECLINE OF MAN, WHICH PARADOXICALLY COINCIDED WITH HIS DISCOVERY OF THE WHEEL... AND A WARNING THAT HIS BRIEF DOMINANCE OF THIS PLANET WILL PROBABLY END, BECAUSE MAN TRIED TO CREATE ROBOT IN HIS OWN IMAGE."

The title of the final track, "Genesis Ch.1 v.32", follows this theme by implying a continuation to the story of Creation, since the first chapter of Genesis only has 31 verses. The track "Don't Let it Show" was later covered by Pat Benatar on her album In the Heat of the Night.

Track listing

1. I Robot (instrumental) – 6:02
2. I Wouldn't Want to Be Like You (lead vocal: Lenny Zakatek) – 3:22
3. Some Other Time (lead vocals: Peter Straker & Jaki Whitren) – 4:06
4. Breakdown (lead vocal: Allan Clarke) – 3:50
5. Don't Let It Show (lead vocal: Dave Townsend) – 4:24
6. The Voice (lead vocal: Steve Harley) – 5:24
7. Nucleus (instrumental) – 3:31
8. Day After Day (The Show Must Go On) (lead vocal: Jack Harris) – 3:49
9. Total Eclipse (instrumental) – 3:09
10. Genesis Ch.1 v.32 (instrumental) – 3:28

Janis Joplin - Greatest Hits (MTV History) (2000)

Imagen

Texas-born blues-rock singer Janis Joplin's sadly short career saw her change from coffee-house folkie into a feminist blues icon for the psychedelic '60s generation, all in the space of four years. Though she started out as a solo singer, it was as the frontwoman for Bay Area acid-blues-rockers Big Brother & The Holding Company that she skyrocketed to fame, her outsized voice, image, and personality making her natural star material. Eventually, she proved too big for the confines of Big Brother and went the solo route. A breakthrough album was recorded just before her early death, adding a tragic aura to her small body of work.

Track Listing

01. Summertime
02. Cry Baby
03. Piece of My Heart

Metallica - Kill 'Em All (1983)

Imagen

Kill 'Em All is the debut album by American metal band Metallica. The album was recorded in only two weeks on a small budget. Only 1500 copies were initially printed, however it has now been certified 3x Platinum by the RIAA, selling over 3 million copies in the U.S. alone.

Track listing

1. Hit The Lights
2. The Four Horsemen
3. Motorbreath
4. Jump In The Fire
5. Anesthesia/Pulling Teeth
6. Whiplash
7. Phantomlord

Supertramp - Crime of the Century (1974) (Remastered 2002)

Imagen

Crime of the Century is the third album by the progressive rock band Supertramp, released in 1974. The album was Supertramp's first to feature its classic lineup and co-producer Ken Scott (who previously worked with David Bowie and The Beatles).

The album was recorded at a number of studios including Ramport Studios (owned by The Who) and Trident Studios.

Many of the songs on the album are still staples of the band's shows ("School", "Bloody Well Right", "Rudy", and the title cut). Almost all of the album appears on the band's 1980 live album Paris although the tracks which featured orchestrations on the original Crime of the Century album ("Asylum", "Rudy", and "Crime of the Century") were replaced by string synthesizers or Oberheim synthesizers which were played mainly by John Helliwell with some help from Roger Hodgson.

The album was Supertramp's first U.S. Top 40 album and was eventually certified Gold in the U.S. in 1977 after the release of Even in the Quietest Moments.

The album was first re-released as a remaster on Gold CD and vinyl from MFSL. Then another remastered CD version of the album was released in 1997 and a different remaster on June 11, 2002, both on A&M Records. The A&M remasters feature all of the album art restored plus credits and full lyrics.

Supertramp - Crisis? What Crisis? (1975) (Remastered 2002)

Imagen

Crisis? What Crisis? is the fourth album by progressive rock band Supertramp, released in 1975.

The album was Supertramp's first album to be recorded in America in Los Angeles.

The title was taken from a line in the 1973 Fred Zinnemann motion picture, The Day of the Jackal, although Rick Davies stated on the US rock radio show Rockline that he had the title of the album written down in one of his books because they couldn't come up with a proper title for the album.

Four of the songs ("Sister Moonshine", "Another Man's Woman", "Lady", and "Just a Normal Day") were performed live before the tracks were recorded and released, as documented on the BBC recorded performance of the band playing at The Hammersmith Odeon in London in March of 1975 and were included on the 2001 release "Is Everybody Listening".

A remastered CD version of the album was released on June 11, 2002 on A&M Records. The remaster features the original artwork and credits plus lyrics to all of the songs which were not on previous issues of the album.

Crisis?

Crisis?

Supertramp - Even In The Quietest Moments... (1977) (Remastered)

Imagen

Even in the Quietest Moments... is the fifth album by progressive rock band Supertramp, released in April 1977.

The album was recorded mainly at Caribou Ranch Studios in Colorado with overdubs, vocals and mixing completed at The Record Plant in Los Angeles and was Supertramp's first album to use engineer Peter Henderson, with whom the band would work for the rest of Roger Hodgson's tenure.

Even in the Quietest Moments reached #16 on the Billboard Pop Albums Charts in 1977 and within a few months of release became Supertramp's first Gold (500,000 copies or more) selling album in the US thanks to "Give a Little Bit" being a US Top 20 single and reaching number 29 on the UK Singles chart.

A remastered CD version of the album with full original artwork, lyrics and credits restored (including the inner sleeve picture of the band absent from the original CD) was released on June 11, 2002 on A&M Records in the US. The cover photo is not doctored - a grand piano was placed on a mountain top at a ski area near Caribou Ranch Studios, covered with snow and photographed.

While "Give a Little Bit" was the big hit, both "Fool's Overture" and "Even in the Quietest Moments (song)" got a fair amount of FM album-rock play.

Trivia:
This album is unique in the Supertramp discography as none of the songs feature the band's trademark Wurlitzer electric piano.
The album cover is an actual photograph; a piano was taken up the Cannonball Lift at Eldora ski area, near Nederland, Colorado, during a snowstorm.
The sheet music on the album cover is labelled "Fool's Overture", but the notes play "The Star Spangled Banner."
"Fool's Overture" was used for many years as the theme song on the Canadian television show W5 [1]
Give A Little Bit appeared in Superman: The Movie.

John Lennon - Imagine (1971) (MFSL Gold 2003)

Imagen

Imagine is John Lennon's second solo album and is considered the most popular of his solo works. Recorded and released in 1971, the album tended toward songs that were gentler, more commercial and less avant-garde than the ones he released on his more critically acclaimed previous album, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band. The difference, he said, was that Imagine was "chocolate-coated for public consumption", in reference to the string sections prevalent throughout the album.

Basic tracks for the album were recorded in his home studio (Ascot Sound Studios in Tittenhurst Park) with strings overdubs added at the Record Plant in New York City. As on his last album, Phil Spector joined Lennon and Yoko Ono as co-producer on Imagine. Extensive footage of the sessions, showing the evolution of some of the songs, was compiled on a video documentary entitled Gimme Some Truth: The Making of John Lennon's Imagine.

The title track "Imagine" became Lennon's signature tune and was written as a plea for world peace. "Jealous Guy" has also had enduring popularity and was originally composed as "Child of Nature" during the songwriting sessions in India in 1968 that led to The Beatles' double-album The Beatles. "Oh My Love" and the song "How?" were influenced by his experience with primal therapy: "How?" contains the questions he was facing while going through the changes produced in him during the ongoing process of primal therapy, while "Oh My Love" was written to communicate the joy and growth Lennon was experiencing as a result of the therapy.

Lennon also indulged his love of rock and roll with "Crippled Inside" and "It's So Hard." "Gimme Some Truth", originally heard in the Let It Be sessions, appears on the album with a new bridge. The politically-themed "I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier" closes the first half of Imagine in a cacophonous manner.

George Harrison guested on a few of Imagine's tracks, most infamously "How Do You Sleep?", Lennon's response to what he considered veiled remarks about him on Paul McCartney's then-current album Ram. Although Lennon softened his stance in the mid-70s and claimed he wrote the song about himself, he revealed in 1980, "I used my resentment against Paul... to create a song... not a terrible vicious horrible vendetta... I used my resentment and withdrawing from Paul and The Beatles, and the relationship with Paul, to write 'How Do You Sleep'. I don't really go 'round with those thoughts in my head all the time".

Early editions of the Imagine LP included a postcard featuring a photo of Lennon holding a pig in mockery of McCartney's similar pose with a sheep of the cover of Ram. At the end of the album is "Oh Yoko!", an ode to his wife complete with a Bob Dylan-style harmonica solo.

Upon release in September and October 1971, Imagine was warmly regarded by critics and promptly went to #1 worldwide and became an enduring seller, with the title track reaching #3 in the U.S. and #1 in the UK following Lennon's death. In 2000, Yoko Ono supervised the remixing of Imagine for its remastered reissue.

In 2003, Imagine was placed at #76 in Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time and reissued by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) on gold CD and on 180 gram half-speed mastered vinyl.

Supertramp - Breakfast In America (1979)

Imagen

Breakfast in America is the sixth album by the band Supertramp, released in 1979. It was recorded the previous year at the Village Recorder in Los Angeles. The album featured four hit singles: "The Logical Song" (#6), "Goodbye Stranger" (#15), "Take the Long Way Home" (#10), and the title track (#16).

Tensions between band members Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies started to come to the fore on this album. When Hodgson was interviewed for an episode of In the Studio with Redbeard devoted to the making of the album, he remarked "Rick [Davies] didn't like the song 'Breakfast in America' and didn't want it on the album. He also didn't want the album to be titled Breakfast in America either and I guess I won out on both accounts". Davies instead preferred either Working Title or Hello Stranger as the album title.

The album's front cover is an overlook of New York City through an airplane window. It was designed by Mike Doud and depicted Kate Murtagh as a Statue of Liberty figure holding a glass of orange juice instead of a torch and the background featured a city made from cornflake box, ashtray, cutlery (for the wharfs), eggboxes, vinegar, ketchup and mustard bottles, all spraypainted white. The twin World Trade Center towers appear as two stacks of boxes and the plate of breakfast represents Battery Park, the departure point for the Staten Island Ferry. The back cover photo, depicting the band members having breakfast while reading their respective hometown newspapers, was taken at a diner called Bert's Mad House.

Breakfast in America won the 1980 Grammy Award for Best Recording Package, beating out albums by Talking Heads and Led Zeppelin, among others.

Breakfast in America features a number of songs played on Wurlitzer electric piano, displaying its most distinctive abilities. (In particular, the different sounds made by the Wurlitzer depending on how hard it is played - songs such as Child of Vision or The Logical Song are built upon this sound.) The peculiar sound of the Wurlitzer had already been put forth in older songs such as Dreamer or Lady but never so extensively into an entire album, making Breakfast in America one of the best examples of the possibilities offered by this instrument.

Despite the turmoil, Breakfast in America became Supertramp's biggest-selling album with more than 4 million copies sold in the US alone to date (11 million copies worldwide) and was #1 on Billboard's Pop Albums Chart for six weeks in the spring and summer of 1979. The album also hit #1 in Norway, Canada and Australia.

The album was first re-released as a remaster on Gold CD from MFSL. Then another remastered CD version of the album was released on June 11, 2002 on A&M with full original album art restored plus the label art from side one recreated on the CD.

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Cosmo's Factory (1970)

Imagen

Cosmo's Factory is the fifth album by American band Creedence Clearwater Revival, released in 1970.

The peak of a prolific streak, Cosmo's Factory was Creedence's fifth album in less than two years. It was a major commercial success, reaching #1 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart, and spawning three top-5 singles; "Lookin' Out My Back Door" (US #2), "Travelin' Band" (US #2), and "Up Around the Bend" (US #4) were all big hits. More amazingly, it also reached #11 on what was then the Billboard Soul Albums chart, a crossover feat nearly unheard of for a white pop/rock band. In Britain it was their only No. 1 album, entering the chart at that position. In 2003, the album was ranked number 262 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

The name of the album comes from the warehouse in Berkeley where the band rehearsed. Bandleader John Fogerty was so insistent on practising (nearly every day) that drummer Doug "Cosmo" Clifford began referring to the place as "the factory".

Early pressings of the album contain a three-second dropout on the left stereo channel during "Before You Accuse Me" and an earlier mix of "Travelin' Band" with John Fogerty's first solo mixed behind the horn section.

Eric Clapton - Slowhand (1977)

Imagen

Slowhand is an album by Eric Clapton, released in 1977. It contained three of his most popular singles, the bluesy "Cocaine", the ballad "Wonderful Tonight" and the country-flavoured #3 U.S. hit "Lay Down Sally", as well as other songs that became Clapton classics on their own like "The Core" and "Next Time You See Her". The album proved to be a big success and a step forward after the relative failure of Clapton's previous album, No Reason to Cry. It was both critically and commercially well received, reaching #2 on the Billboard Album Charts, only surpassed by the blockbuster Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. In 2003, the album was ranked number 325 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

The Core" and "Next Time You See Her".

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Pendulum (1971)

Imagen

Pendulum is the sixth album by American band Creedence Clearwater Revival, released in 1970 (see 1970 in music). It was also the final Creedence album with rhythm guitarist Tom Fogerty who left the group shortly after this album was released. The group continued as a trio.

The most sonically adventurous of Creedence albums, the "surprisingly durable" (Robert Christgau) Pendulum is noted for its widespread use of horns and keyboards in contrast to the group's previous albums which were dominated by guitar. A female backing chorus even appears on one track. Among several lesser-known Fogerty songs ("Pagan Baby," "Sailor's Lament," "It's Just a Thought") were two top-ten hits, "Hey Tonight" and "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?". Both songs reached number eight in 1971. It also contains their only avant-garde venture "Rude Awakening #2".

The 1987 CD reissue of the album notes that the record was more experimental for the time period, and notes that it was highly regarded among popular music fans, noting it is "universally acknowledged as among the greatest in the annals of rock".

1. Pagan Baby – 6:25
2. Sailor's Lament – 3:49
3. Chameleon – 3:21
4. Have You Ever Seen the Rain? – 2:40
5. (Wish I Could) Hideaway – 3:47
6. Born to Move – 5:40
7. Hey Tonight – 2:45
8. It's Just a Thought – 3:56
