Red Hot Chili Peppers – Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991)

Imagen

Blood Sugar Sex Magik is the fifth studio album by American alternative rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, released on September 24, 1991. Produced by Rick Rubin, it was the band's first record released on Warner Bros. Records. The musical styles of Blood Sugar Sex Magik differed notably from the techniques employed on the Chili Peppers' preceding album, Mother's Milk, and featured little use of heavy metal guitar riffs. The album's subject matter incorporated sexual innuendos and references to drugs and death as well as themes of lust and exuberance.

Peaking at number three on the Billboard 200, the album has sold over thirteen million copies worldwide and was the Red Hot Chili Peppers' introduction into worldwide popularity and critical acclaim. Blood Sugar Sex Magik produced an array of hit singles including the hugely successful "Under the Bridge," "Give It Away," "Suck My Kiss" and "Breaking the Girl." Guitarist John Frusciante quit the band mid-tour in 1992 (until returning in 1998) due to his inability to cope with the album's popularity. Blood Sugar Sex Magik is recognized as an influential and seminal component of the alternative rock explosion in the early 1990s and serves as the most critically praised album the band has recorded; Steve Huey of Allmusic noted that Blood Sugar Sex Magik is "...probably the best album the Chili Peppers will ever make."

The Beatles - Anthology 1, 2 & 3 (1995, 1996 & 1996)

ImagenImagenImagen

Anthology 1 is a compilation album by The Beatles and the first of a three-volume collection. It was released by Apple Records (catalogue number 34445) in November 1995 (tying in with the televised special The Beatles Anthology, which aired in three parts), and includes rarities and alternative tracks from the period 1958–1964, including their days as "The Quarrymen", through the Decca auditions to the album Beatles for Sale. Also included on this album was the Jeff Lynne-produced track "Free as a Bird," billed as the first new Beatles song in 25 years.

Anthology 2 is a compilation album by The Beatles released in March 1996 by Apple Records as part of the The Beatles Anthology series. The album includes rare, live, and alternative tracks from the sessions for Help! through the sessions for Magical Mystery Tour and early 1968 sessions before the band travelled to India. The album featured the second new Beatle track, "Real Love", a re-worked song originally by John Lennon.

Anthology 3 is a compilation album by The Beatles released in October 1996 by Apple Records as part of The Beatles Anthology series. The album includes rarities and alternative tracks from the final two years of the band's career, ranging from the initial sessions for The Beatles (also known as The White Album) to the last sessions for Let It Be and Abbey Road in later 1969.
Following "Free as a Bird" in Anthology 1 and "Real Love" in Anthology 2, a third John Lennon solo demo entitled "Now and Then" was to be reworked by the three surviving members of The Beatles for Anthology 3. However, it was decided against due to complications and sound quality issues involving Lennon's recording. In its place is "A Beginning," an orchestral instrumental track initially intended for The White Album.
Similar to the previous Anthology albums, the cover image painted by Klaus Voorman features a collage of The Beatles-related imagery designed to appear as a wall of peeling posters and album covers. An updated picture of Voorman can be seen in George Harrison's hair in a segment of the Revolver album cover.
This was the group's third double album in a row to go to #1 on the American charts, equaling a record set by Donna Summer back in the 1970s.

The Knack - Get The Knack (1979)

Imagen

Get the Knack is the debut album by The Knack, released in June 1979. The album went platinum (one million units sold) in just two months and spent five weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart. The lead single from the album, "My Sharona", was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks and #1 on Billboard's Top Pop Singles of 1979 year end chart. The LP also featured the 2nd single "Good Girls Don't" which peaked at #11 on The Billboard Hot 100 chart. Other cuts that received significant airplay on AOR radio were: "(She's So) Selfish" and "Frustrated".

The album was recorded in two weeks at a cost of just $18,000 and became an instant success, thanks in part to an intense promotional campaign by Capitol Records. The Knack's image was largely influenced by The Beatles. The album cover imitates The Beatles' first Capitol LP Meet the Beatles and the back cover photo depicts a scene very close to a shot from The Beatles' film A Hard Day's Night. To complete the Beatle imagery, the 1960s Capitol rainbow label adorned the LP. To many critics, The Knack's image seemed too contrived and soon there was a backlash against their overnight success. A San Francisco artist, Hugh Brown, even started a "Knuke the Knack" campaign complete with t-shirts, buttons and bumper stickers.

Track Listing

01. Let Me Out
02. Your Number Or Your Name

Michael Jackson - King of Pop (Deluxe UK Edition) (2008)

Imagen

King of Pop is a compilation album released in commemoration of Michael Jackson's 50th birthday. The album differs significantly from each country where it was released as fan voting was employed to determine the songs for each country's version. The album's title comes from the title Jackson acquired approximately 20 years earlier. The album's launch was made public on June 20, 2008 with the official announcement of the Australian version. The first release came with the German edition (which is identical to the Swiss edition) on August 22, 2008.

Fans in countries where Sony BMG operates national offices were given the opportunity to vote for songs from a list of Jackson's back catalogue to be included in their country's version of the album. Aside from the tracks selected by fans, a megamix of songs from the Thriller album by Jason Nevins was also included in the pool. The album has been released in a total of 26 countries. Each pool list and release date differed slightly by country. There has been no announcement of a release in North America.

Currently the album has reached the top ten in the majority of countries it was released and has sold over four million copies worldwide. It has also charted, albeit lower, in other countries due to imported sales.

10cc - The Very Best Of 10cc (1997)

Imagen

The quirky British 1970s outfit 10cc had its roots in '60s pop--band member Graham Gouldman had penned hits for the Yardbirds, the Hollies, and others--giving it a solid grounding in songcraft. The members meshed their sophisticated songwriting skills with a loopy sense of humour for a string of hit singles ("Dreadlock Holiday", "I'm Not in Love", "Rubber Bullets", etc) that were alternately sweet and sardonic. In '76, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme left the band to form their own duo, recording ambitious albums and producing high-profile videos for other acts. The remaining members carried on less successfully into the early '80s, though the following decade saw sporadic reunions.

The Very Best Of 10cc is a 1997 compilation album by the band 10cc. The album comes with an exclusive essay written by Chris White especially for it. The album features all of the highest charting material from the band's career and also features several songs by Godley & Creme and Neanderthal Man by Hotlegs, acts closely associated with 10cc.

Track Listing

01. Donna
02. Rubber Bullets
03. The Dean And I

The Offspring - Greatest Hits (2005)

Imagen

Nirvana finally made it acceptable for U.S. top-40 fans to embrace punk rock, and bands like Green Day and the Offspring followed up the charts in their wake. While California's Offspring had been slugging it out since the late-'80s, it wasn't until the mid-'90s that the band hit paydirt with a slew of anthemic punk-pop ditties.

Greatest Hits is a compilation album by American punk rock band The Offspring released on June 20, 2005 internationally and June 21, 2005 in North America. It includes hit singles from five of the band's studio albums as well as the previously unreleased songs "Can't Repeat" and "Next to You", the latter being a cover of The Police song and appearing as a hidden track at the end of the album. Greatest Hits peaked at #8 on The Billboard 200 with 70,000 copies sold in its first week of release and has been certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.

"Can't Repeat" was released as a single to promote the album, and peaked at #9 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart and #10 on its Mainstream Rock Tracks. "Next to You" was also released as a single to radio stations, peaking at #29 on Mainstream Rock Tracks. A DVD/UMD video entitled Complete Music Video Collection was released a month later to complement Greatest Hits. It included the music videos for all fourteen songs on Greatest Hits (excluding "Next to You", for which no video was filmed), as well as three additional songs which had been released as singles but were not included on Greatest Hits: "The Meaning of Life" and "I Choose" from Ixnay on the Hombre, and "She's Got Issues" from Americana. These songs, along with several others the band had released as singles during the course of their career, had not charted as highly as those selected for Greatest Hits.

Ian Dury - New Boots And Panties!! (1977)

Imagen

Ian Robins Dury (12 May 1942 – 27 March 2000) was an English rock and roll singer, lyricist, bandleader and actor who initially rose to fame during the late 1970s, during the punk and New Wave era of rock music. He is best known as founder, frontman, and lead singer of the British band Ian Dury and the Blockheads, who were amongst the most important groups of the New Wave era in the UK.

As a lyricist, his authorship of highly popular songs of the time, in particular the classic single, "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll", was underplayed at the time by critics, though it has been performed and quoted by countless musicians since it was written.

New Boots and Panties!! is a 1977 album by Ian Dury.

The title derives from Dury's habit of buying clothes second hand, and refers to the only items he insisted on buying new, according to Ian Dury & The Blockheads: Song By Song the name was chosen by Dury from a list of 20 drawn up by compere Kosmo Vinyl. The album is not credited to "Ian Dury & The Blockheads" as the band was not formed until Stiff's Live Stiffs tour some months after its recording, and two of the band do not play on the album.

It features Ian's son Baxter on the front cover.

New Boots And Panties!! was released on 30 September 1977, following the release of Dury's iconic single "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll". The single was not a commercial success and nor was it included on the album's original press (Dury expressed a strong desire for singles not to be included on the album and as such the song and its b-side were omitted) although a subsequent pressing has the track, uncredited, at the start of side 2. This did not affect people's reaction to the album however (at the time it was not as uncommon to produce 'stand alone singles' as it is today) and it was given rave reviews not only in the music press, but in broadsheet newspapers' art columns and other highbrow publications: Robin Denselow, for instance, reviewed it for The Guardian (11 October 1977). The album did not enter the top of the British charts but it did go platinum, and its (much softer) follow-up album Do It Yourself would reach number 2.

In 2000 Q magazine placed it at number 66 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever.

Ian Dury & The Blockheads - Do It Yourself (1979)

Imagen

Do It Yourself is a 1979 album by Ian Dury & The Blockheads. It was the first album to be credited to Ian Dury & The Blockheads rather than Ian Dury alone, although Dury had used the full band name for the "What A Waste" 7" single of 1978. The album was released in the wake of the chart-topping hit single "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick", and reached number two in the charts, behind ABBA's Voulez-Vous. Do It Yourself sold around 200,000 copies, and was Dury's second Platinum album (after its predecessor New Boots and Panties!!).

In keeping with Dury's policy of not including singles on albums, "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" was omitted, and no singles were released from the album either (his next British single would be "Reasons to be Cheerful, Part 3"). Most retrospective interviews with band and management bemoan this and nearly all suggest the opening track "Inbetweenies" as the ideal choice of single; "Inbetweenies" was released in Europe, backed with "Dance Of The Screamers". The lack of singles on the album did not greatly affect the album's chart performance.

The B-52's - The B-52's (1979)

Imagen

The B-52s originated as a New Wave rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, United States, in 1976. The B-52s' sound is marked by the vocals — the female harmonies of Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson, and the generally spoken-word or sprechgesang male vocal counterpoint of Fred Schneider, Ricky Wilson's surf style guitar and Keith Strickland's go go beat drumming. The resulting unique "guy vs. gals" vocals, sometimes used in call and response style (as in their songs "Private Idaho" and "Good Stuff"), are a trademark of the band. Presenting as a positive, enthusiastic, slightly wacky party band, the B-52s have focused on songs telling tall tales ("Rock Lobster", "Girl from Ipanema Goes to Greenland"), glorifying wild youth ("Love Shack", "Deadbeat Club"), or celebrating wild romance ("Strobe Light", "Hot Pants Explosion"), all set to a danceable New Wave beat.

The band's name comes from a particular beehive hairdo resembling the nose cone of the aircraft of the same name. Keith Strickland suggested the name after a dream he had one night, of a band performing in a hotel lounge. In the dream he heard someone whisper in his ear that the name of the band was "The B-52s." During their early years, wigs of that style were often worn by the band's female singers Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson.[1] The correct name for the band had long been "The B-52's", but in 2008 they dropped the apostrophe, with their official website and Funplex album and single covers reading "The B-52s". In a June 2009 interview with the Arizona Daily Star Schneider said that band will hereafter be known without its apostrophe.

The B-52's is an eponymous New Wave album by Athens, Georgia-based rock band The B-52's. The kitschy lyrics and mood, and the hook-laden harmonies helped establish a fanbase for the band, who would go on to release several chart-topping singles. Because the words "Play Loud" and "High Fidelity" appear on the original LP, this album is sometimes erroneously referred to by either of those phrases as the album's title.

The B-52's peaked at number 59 on the Billboard 200 and "Rock Lobster" peaked at number 56 on the Hot 100.

In 2003 the TV network VH1 named The B-52's the 99th greatest album of all time. Shortly before his death, John Lennon said he enjoyed the album. In his 1995 book, "The Alternative Music Almanac", Alan Cross placed the album in the #9 spot on the list of '10 Classic Alternative Albums'. In 2003 the album was ranked number 152 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

The album cover was designed by "Sue Absurd" (aka Tony Wright), who also worked with musicians such as Bob Dylan, Bob Marley and Traffic.

The B-52's - Time Capsule (1998)

Imagen

Eschewing everything but the pursuit of fun, Athens, GA's B-'52s burst onto the New Wave scene in 1979. Their mix of '50s/'60s kitsch and pure pop instincts produced some classic campy tunes ("Rock Lobster", "Private Idaho"). The band's popularity hit new peaks a decade later with the release of COSMIC THING and the huge hits "Love Shack", "Roam", and "Deadbeat Club", showing how fully the group had penetrated the pop-culture landscape.

Time Capsule: Songs For a Future Generation is a greatest hits album released by The B-52's in 1998. The album presents sixteen of their single releases and fan-favorite album tracks in chronolgical order, with the addition of two newly-recorded songs exclusive to this collection. One of them, "Debbie", is a tribute to Debbie Harry of Blondie. Also exclusive to this release is the "Original Unreleased Mix" of their 1986 song "Summer of Love".

Blondie - Parallel Lines (1978)

Imagen

Blondie is an American pop/rock band founded by singer Deborah Harry and guitarist Chris Stein, the band was a pioneer in the early American new wave and punk rock scenes of the mid 1970s. Their first two albums contained strong elements of these genres, and although successful in the United Kingdom and Australia, Blondie was regarded as an underground band in the United States until the release of Parallel Lines in 1978. Over the next three years, the band achieved several hit singles and was noted for its eclectic mix of musical styles incorporating elements of disco, pop and reggae, while retaining a basic style as a new wave band.

The band broke up after the release of their 1982 album The Hunter. Debbie Harry continued to pursue a solo career with varied results (though she took a few years off to care for partner Chris Stein, who had developed a life-threatening illness). Keyboardist Jimmy Destri also embarked on a solo career of his own with somewhat less success than Harry.

The group reformed in 1997, achieving renewed success and a number one single in the United Kingdom with "Maria" in 1999. The group toured and performed throughout the world over the following years, and was inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the RockWalk of Fame in 2006. Blondie have so far sold 40 million records worldwide.

Parallel Lines is the third studio album by American New Wave band Blondie, released in 1978 on Chrysalis records. Their most popular and best selling effort, Parallel Lines was the first Blondie album to be produced by Mike Chapman. The album reached number one in the United Kingdom in February 1979. It contains several of the best-known Blondie hits, including "Heart of Glass", "Hanging on the Telephone", "Sunday Girl" and "One Way or Another". Six of the twelve tracks were issued as singles, either in the U.S. or the UK. Parallel Lines is ranked at number 140 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 18th Greatest Album of All-Time by NME, and the 7th Greatest American Album of All-Time by Blender Magazine. Parallel Lines sold over 20 million copies worldwide.

Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell (1977)

Imagen

Bat out of Hell is a 1977 album by singer Meat Loaf, songwriter Jim Steinman, and producer Todd Rundgren that became the third best-selling album worldwide (together with Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon) behind Michael Jackson's Thriller and AC/DC's Back in Black, continuing to sell approximately 200,000 per year. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it at number 343 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time in 2003. Its musical style is influenced by Steinman's appreciation of Richard Wagner, Phil Spector and Bruce Springsteen.

This album's title also became the title for two more Meat Loaf albums. Steinman produced the 1993 album, Bat out of Hell II: Back into Hell. Desmond Child produced the 2006 album, Bat out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose.

Michael Lee Aday, better known by his stage names Meat Loaf and Meat Loaf Aday, is an American rock musician and actor.

Overwrought and undeniable, Meat Loaf's "Bat out of Hell" remains both one of rock's biggest - and least likely - hit albums. The byproduct of a partnership between beefy singer Marvin Lee "Meat Loaf" Aday and fellow journeyman/National Lampoon Road Show cast member Jim Steinman, Bat out of Hell met 1977's vaunted Year of Punk with a blast of neo-operatic, Wagnerian-scaled bombast (based on Peter Pan, no less) that was as reactionary as anything the spiked set and their supporters could possibly imagine - 13 million units worth, and counting. Bat seems to have thrived on the same formula that's made Andrew Lloyd Webber a multimillionaire knight: if you do kitsch, do it big. And what could be more kitschy and emblematic of the '70s than the ubiquitous "classic rock" (an overused adjective that applies all too well here) of "Two out of Three Ain't Bad" or the breathless nookie-quest, "Paradise by the Dashboard Light," replete with Phil Rizzuto calling the play-by-play?

Track listing

1. Bat out of Hell – 9:48
2. You Took the Words Right out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night) – 5:04
3. Heaven Can Wait – 4:38
4. All Revved Up with No Place to Go – 4:19
5. Two out of Three Ain't Bad – 5:23
6. Paradise by the Dashboard Light – 8:28 (Performed by Meat Loaf & Ellen Foley)
7. For Crying Out Loud – 8:45

Madonna - Celebration (2009)

Imagen

Celebration is the third greatest hits album from American singer Madonna, and the closing release under her contract with Warner Bros. Records, her record company since 1982. The release follows her two previous greatest hits albums, The Immaculate Collection (1990) and GHV2 (2001). The album was released as a single CD, a deluxe double CD version and around thirty Madonna music videos with iTunes deluxe version. A compilation DVD, entitled Celebration: The Video Collection, was released to accompany the audio versions.

Celebration was appreciated by contemporary critics who noted the vastness of Madonna's back-catalogue. The album debuted at the top of the charts in the United Kingdom, Italy and Ireland. Madonna tied with Elvis Presley to have the most number-one albums as a solo artist in the United Kingdom. This tally also included the soundtrack album Evita. In other nations, it debuted within the top-ten. The title track was released as the first single of the album. It became Madonna's fortieth number-one song on Billboard's dance chart.

"Celebration" was confirmed to be the first single from the compilation. A first preview of the song was added on the performance for "Holiday" on her 2009 leg of the Sticky & Sweet Tour. It was to be released to radio stations on August 3, 2009. However, the single leaked on to the internet, so the date was changed to July 31, 2009. The digital download was also released on this date due to the leak. Remixes of the song were released to dance clubs on July 24, 2009. "Celebration" received mixed reviews from contemporary critics. The song reached the top of the charts in countries like Finland, Italy and Sweden, while reaching the top-ten in other European nations. It became Madonna's fifty-fifth entry to the Billboard Hot 100 and her fortieth number-one song on the Billboard Dance Club chart.

Enya - Watermark (1988)

Imagen

Watermark is an album by Irish musician Enya, released in 1988. Featuring her first major hit, "Orinoco Flow", Watermark was Enya's breakthrough album release, and is considered a seminal example of New Age music, although Enya herself does not consider her work to be of that genre.

Two versions of the album were released. In 1989, an extended version of Watermark included "Storms in Africa Part II" (as sung in English), which was previously released on a popular CD single. Some later reissues of Watermark once again omit this track.

Track listing

1. Watermark – 2:24
2. Cursum Perficio – 4:06
3. On Your Shore – 3:59
4. Storms in Africa – 4:03
5. Exile – 4:20
6. Miss Clare Remembers – 1:59
7. Orinoco Flow – 4:25
8. Evening Falls... – 3:46
9. River – 3:10
10. The Longships – 3:36
11. Na Laetha Geal M'Óige – 3:54
12. Storms in Africa (Part II) – 3:01

Storms in Africa (Part II) was added to 1989 issues of the album. It has been constantly retained on the American, Reprise Records, releases, and in a few other territories, but most global versions have only the standard eleven tracks.
