Diana Krall - The Very Best Of Diana Krall (2007)

Imagen

The Very Best of Diana Krall collects a nice cross-section of tracks the pianist/vocalist recorded beginning with her 1996 breakthrough album, All for You, and moving through to her 2006 effort From This Moment On. These are largely urbane and stylish recordings that range from her intimate and swinging trio work with guitarist Russell Malone and bassist Christian McBride to her lush orchestral and big-band numbers. While this is primarily a compilation for fans of the sophisticated, jazz standards-oriented Krall, Verve does earn some kudos for including at least one cut from her deeply personal and subsequently not as popular effort The Girl in the Other Room. Also featured are cuts from her stellar 2002 concert album Live in Paris. If you're a fan of straight-ahead jazz with a heavy dash of romance and haven't checked out Krall's work, The Very Best is superb place to start.

Track listing
1. "'S Wonderful" (George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin) – 4:26
2. "Peel Me a Grape" (Dave Frishberg) - 5:50
3. "Pick Yourself Up" (Dorothy Fields, Jerome Kern) – 3:01

David Bowie - The Best Of David Bowie 1980/1987

Imagen

The '80s were a curious time for David Bowie. Never had he sold more records, had bigger hits, his influence was everywhere, and yet, the music he made often fell a little flat, especially after his commercial high-water mark of 1983's Let's Dance. The 2007 compilation The Best of David Bowie 1980/1987 deals with that drop-off in quality in an admirable fashion, perhaps the only appropriate fashion: it ignores it. There are two tracks from 1984's Tonight, and two from its 1987 sequel Never Let Me Down, while there are four apiece from Let's Dance and Scary Monsters -- a skewed ratio that is nevertheless an accurate barometer of the worth of the albums. It also makes for a better listen as a compilation, since the hit singles from these records are surrounded by non-LP cuts and soundtrack contributions like "This Is Not America" and "Absolute Beginners," a move that's not only helpful as a clearinghouse of relative oddities, but also helps make this Best of David Bowie 1980/1987 a truly representative collection of the best music of some patchy years, which is a more worthwhile endeavor than having this be truly representative of the decade as a whole. For some Bowie fans, this may be all they need from that decade (although they'd be well-advised not to ignore the truly masterful Scary Monsters, and use that as a supplement to this excellent disc).

Track listing
All songs written by David Bowie except as noted.
1. "Let's Dance" (single version) – 4:07
2. "Ashes to Ashes" (single version) – 3:36
3. "Under Pressure" (Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon, Roger Taylor) (single version) – 4:05
4. "Fashion" (single version) – 3:26
5. "Modern Love" (single version) – 3:58
6. "China Girl" (single version) – 4:17
7. "Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)" (single version) – 3:32
8. "Up the Hill Backwards" – 3:15
9. "Alabama Song" (Kurt Weill, Bertolt Brecht) – 3:52
10. "The Drowned Girl" – 2:26
11. "Cat People (Putting Out Fire)" (Bowie, Giorgio Moroder) (single version) – 4:12
12. "This Is Not America" (with Pat Metheny Group) (Bowie, Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays) – 3:51

Depeche Mode - The Best of Depeche Mode, Volume 1

Imagen

Originally a product of Britain's new romantic movement, Depeche Mode went on to become the quintessential electro-pop band of the 1980s. One of the first acts to establish a musical identity based completely around the use of synthesizers, they began their existence as a bouncy dance-pop outfit but gradually developed a darker, more dramatic sound that ultimately positioned them as one of the most successful alternative bands of their era.

The Best Of, Volume 1 is the fifth compilation album by British group Depeche Mode. The album was released on 13 November 2006 by Mute Records (see 2006 in British music). Other compilation albums by the band include Catching Up with Depeche Mode and People Are People (both North American-only releases) along with The Singles 81>85 and The Singles 86>98.
The current collection consists of selected Depeche Mode hits from their twenty-five year career. Along with the recent hits from the Playing the Angel album, a new song "Martyr" - recorded during the Playing the Angel sessions - is also included in this collection and was released as a single in late October 2006.
The album has sold over 1 million copies in Europe alone and has been awarded the IFPI Platinum Europe Award.

Track listing
All tracks are presented in their 7"/CD single versions.

Depeche Mode - The Singles 86>98 (1998)

Imagen

The Singles 86>98 is a singles compilation album released in 1998 by Depeche Mode. It was released as a follow-up to the bands previous compilation, The Singles 81>85, which was also re-released in the same year. The compilation covers the band's 7-inch single releases spanning five studio albums (from 1986's Black Celebration to 1997's Ultra), as well as including the band's 1998 stand-alone single "Only When I Lose Myself". Also included is "Little 15" (from Music for the Masses, released in Europe, and the live version of "Everything Counts" (from the live album 101) which was released as a single in 1989. All tracks on The Singles 86>98 were newly remastered, as was the case with the re-release of The Singles 81>85.

The four-month Singles Tour that followed marked the first time Depeche Mode had toured since the 1993-94 Devotional/Exotic Tour (they had declined to tour to support Ultra a year earlier, instead they only played a few shows with a small number of songs).

As of April 2006, The Singles 86>98 has sold 562,000 units in the U.S. (double albums count as two units), achieving platinum status. This album was also listed in Blender magazine's 500 CDs You Must Own.

Depeche Mode - Sounds of the Universe (2009)

Imagen

Sounds of the Universe is the twelfth full-length album by Depeche Mode, released in Europe on 20 April, 2009, and on 21 April, 2009, in the US and Canada. It's supported by the ongoing Tour of the Universe. The album contains 13 tracks.

As with the previous album, Playing the Angel, Dave Gahan has once again written three songs with Christian Eigner and Andrew Phillpott: "Hole to Feed", "Come Back" and "Miles Away / The Truth Is". "Spacewalker" and the B-Side "Esque" are instrumentals. Martin Gore shares lead singing duties with Gahan on "In Chains", and sings the lead of "Jezebel" and the B-side "The Sun and the Moon and the Stars". The B-side "Oh Well" is the first track ever to be co-written by Gore and Gahan. The album ends with a short hidden instrumental track after "Corrupt", possibly called Interlude #5, which can be seen as "Wrong (reprise)".

Tattoo You is an album by The Rolling Stones, released in 1981. The follow-up to Emotional Rescue, it proved to be a big critical and commercial success upon its release and is still celebrated as one of The Rolling Stones' finest full-length releases, despite its prolonged recording history.
Tattoo You is primarily composed of outtakes, some dating back a decade, with new vocals and overdubs. Along with two new songs, the Rolling Stones put together this collection in order to have a new album to promote for their worldwide American Tour 1981/European Tour 1982 beginning that September.

Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble - Blues At Sunrise (2000)

Imagen

The concept behind Blues at Sunrise is a good one: collect ten of SRV's best slow blues numbers, primarily from the official studio albums but also a couple of unreleased cuts and rarities, and sequence them as if they were a lost studio album. It's a neat idea, especially when it's packaged in artwork that deliberately evokes memories of classic blues albums from the '60s (there's even a fake, faded record ring on the front and back covers), and it's hard to fault the music here. All the obvious selections are here -- "Ain't Gone 'N' Give Up on Love," "The Things (That) I Used to Do," Leave My Girl Alone." And the rarities are all worthwhile, including a live "Texas Flood" from the Live at the El Macambo video, a live duet with Johnny Copeland on "Tin Pan Alley" from 1985, an unreleased take of "The Sky Is Crying" from Couldn't Stand the Weather, and a duet with Albert King on "Blues at Sunrise" (also available on the Fantasy disc In Session). Still, some fans may complain, since this is the first posthumous release that feels as if it's trying to trick the hardcore into purchasing music they already have. That's a legitimate complaint, because there are only two songs that the hardcore won't have, and they very well may not want to sink down dollars for something that's just a reconfiguration of familiar tunes. But, as reconfigurations and repackagings go, Blues at Sunrise is strong and entertaining, working quite well as a mood piece. It may not be revelatory, but if you strip away your qualms and quibbles, it's enjoyable.

01. Ain't Gone 'N' Give Up On Love
02. Leave My Girl Alone 04:13
03. Tin Pan Alley (Live) [feat Johnny Copeland]
04. Chitlins Con Carne
05. The Things (That) I Used To Do
06. The Sky Is Crying
07. Texas Flood (video version) (Live)
08. May I Have A Talk With You
09. Dirty Pool
10. Blues At Sunrise (Live) [feat Albert King]

Van Morrison & Linda Gail Lewis - You Win Again (2000)

Imagen

Van Morrison has always been eccentric, but as he grows older, he seems to get more comfortable with his eccentricities and doesn't strain as hard to be distinctive. That's why it seems natural to have two albums in one year be as willfully individual as The Skiffle Sessions and You Win Again, a duet album with Linda Gail Lewis. In all honesty, in 2000, nobody but Jerry Lee Lewis fanatics really remembered that his sister Linda Gail is a talent in her own right, but Morrison had a soft spot for her and decided to record a full album with her. It's a modest affair, sporting only one Morrison original ("No Way Pedro") and relying heavily on Jerry Lee's catalog, opening with four songs inextricably associated with his Sun recordings. But, if this is a tribute album, it's only because this music is in the same spirit as those great recordings. Not everything here is associated with Jerry Lee, but Linda Gail's piano is reminiscent of her sibling, and both she and Morrison have the same fearless spirit as the Killer, easily making these songs fit their voices and blur the distinctions between R&B, blues, country, and rock & roll. Best of all, this is never a conscious decision; they're just pounding out a bunch of songs they love. You Win Again sounds like it was knocked off in one afternoon by a bar band that knows each other so well, they can anticipate each other's next move. It wasn't, of course, but that's the highest compliment it can be paid. No, it's not a major work in Van's catalog, but it's hard not to smile when listening to it, just like The Skiffle Sessions. It's a roots effort that never sounds studied — just easy, welcoming, and thoroughly enjoyable.

Track listing
1. "Let's Talk About Us" (Otis Blackwell) – 2:53
2. "You Win Again" (Hank Williams) – 3:01
3. "Jambalaya (On the Bayou)" (Williams) – 2:57
4. "Crazy Arms" (Ralph Mooney, Chuck Seals) – 3:37
5. "Old Black Joe" (Jerry Lee Lewis) – 3:21
6. "Think Twice Before You Go" (Al Smith) – 2:38
7. "No Way Pedro" (Van Morrison) – 3:44
8. "Shot of Rhythm and Blues" (Terry Thompson) – 3:59
9. "Real Gone Lover" (Dave Bartholomew, Ruth Durand, Joseph Robichaux) – 3:09
10. "Why Don't You Love Me (Like You Used to Do)?" (Williams) – 2:23
11. "Cadillac" (Ellas McDaniel) – 2:33
12. "Baby (You've Got What It Takes)" (Clyde Otis, Murray Stein, Brook Benton) – 3:45
13. "Boogie Chillen" (John Lee Hooker) – 4:00

Van Morrison - The Best Of Van Morrison (1990)

Imagen

The Best of Van Morrison is a compilation album by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison, released in 1990. This was his first ever "Best of" album and was one of the best-selling albums of the 90s, spending a year and a half on the UK charts after charting at #4 and at #1 in Australia on the ARIA Albums Chart. With the combined success of this album and the previous album, Avalon Sunset, Morrison was once again in the pop/rock mainstream after a decade. The songs on the album were pulled from twenty-five years of material. One of the songs, "Wonderful Remark" had previously only been available on the soundtrack of the film, The King of Comedy.

For an artist who's doggedly album-oriented, plus a songwriter who revels in subtlety, Van Morrison doesn't seem like a logical candidate for a successful greatest-hits compilation. Nevertheless, The Best of Van Morrison is a crackerjack compilation, tracing Van the Man from his days with Them, through his best-known tunes ("Brown-Eyed Girl," "Moondance," "Blue Money," "Wild Night"), to highlights from the '70s and '80s cult efforts, topped off by "Wonderful Remark," a song first heard on the King of Comedy soundtrack. This collection makes Morrison's work seem a little more immediate and accessible than it usually is, but that's a blessing, since it provides a great summary of his hits and a nice introduction for the curious. Yes, it could have dug deeper into the catalog, but as a sampler, it can't be faulted.

Track listing
All songs written by Van Morrison except as indicated.
1. "Bright Side of the Road" – 3:45
2. "Gloria" – 2:37
3. "Moondance" – 4:31
4. "Baby, Please Don't Go" (Big Joe Williams) – 3:03
5. "Have I Told You Lately" – 4:18
6. "Brown Eyed Girl" – 3:03
7. "Sweet Thing" – 4:22
8. "Warm Love" – 3:21
9. "Wonderful Remark" – 3:58
10. "Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile)" – 2:57
11. "Full Force Gale" – 3:12
12. "And It Stoned Me" – 4:30
13. "Here Comes the Night" (Bert Berns) – 2:46
14. "Domino" – 3:08
15. "Did Ye Get Healed?" – 4:06
16. "Wild Night" – 3:31
17. "Cleaning Windows" – 4:42
18. "Whenever God Shines His Light" (duet with Cliff Richard) – 4:54
19. "Queen of the Slipstream" – 4:53
20. "Dweller on the Threshold" (Morrison, Hugh Murphy) – 4:47
