VA - Woodstock: 40 Years On: Back to Yasgur's Farm (2009)

Imagen

Much has been written about the significance of the Woodstock Music & Art Fair as a cultural event. Ironically, what has been least examined up to now is the very thing that brought nearly half a million together in 1969: the music itself. As the historic festival marks its 40-year anniversary, Rhino presents WOODSTOCK: 40 YEARS ON: BACK TO YASGUR'S FARM, six-CD collection that features the most comprehensive collection ever available of artists that performed at the original festival, sequenced in chronological order of performance, featuring previously unreleased recordings, including the Grateful Dead, The Who, Tim Hardin, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe & The Fish, and others. To assemble the most comprehensive document of the myth-steeped weekend, the boxed set's co-producer Andy Zax pored over every inch of multitrack tape in search of the strongest parts of each of the 33 sets. "The way we approached all of the material was as if it was a cinéma verité documentary - the raw record of the event," Zax says. In addition to the music, the set offers considerable amount of ancillary material sprinkled throughout the discs - stage announcements, lysergic babble, the sounds of rain, a cameo appearance by Abbie Hoffman, and the graciousness of Max Yasgur's address to the crowd, heard for the first time in its entirety. Another significant byproduct of WOODSTOCK: 40 YEARS ON: BACK TO YASGUR'S FARM is that, by virtue of its size and rigorously chronological sequence, it gets closer to a sense of the performances as they occurred in real time than any previous compilation. For the first time, the complete and accurate set lists will be available in the boxed set's booklet. Some Woodstock aficionados will be taken aback by the actual order of the performances; it differs from both various written accounts and from Michael Wadleigh's film Woodstock, which takes certain liberties with chronology in order to maintain its narrative flow.

Lou Reed - Walk On The Wild Side: The Best Of Lou Reed (1977)

Imagen

Walk on the Wild Side: The Best of Lou Reed is the first greatest hits compilation by Lou Reed, formerly of The Velvet Underground. It was issued by RCA records after the termination of Reed's first contract with them ended in 1976. Issued on compact disc on October 25, 1990.

Walk on the Wild Side: The Best of Lou Reed was the standard record company "hits" compilation surveying Reed's five-year, eight-album sojourn at RCA from 1972 to 1976. Its 11 songs included two from Lou Reed, three from Transformer (among them, of course, this album's title track, Reed's sole chart hit), one from Berlin, two from Rock N Roll Animal (one of which is "Sweet Jane" minus the introductory fanfare), and the title tracks from Sally Can't Dance and Coney Island Baby, plus the previously non-LP B-side "Nowhere at All." It was a bulletproof selection, as unimaginative as it was dependable, which oddly was why it worked so well. Reed's solo career had seen some extreme tangents, and this album caught them, from the Dylan-ish "Wild Child" to the glam pop of the Transformer material, and from the heavy metal rearrangements of old Velvet Underground songs on Rock N Roll Animal to the attempts at straightforward adult singer/songwriter rock on songs like "Coney Island Baby." The regular albums had been uneven, but here Reed comes off as an accomplished dabbler in a variety of styles who really had something to say and said it, sometimes humorously, sometimes frantically, but always with conviction. Reed has been a prolific artist, and this album captures only a fraction of his catalog, but he is actually less eclectic as a rule than this collection makes him seem, so the result is an excellent introduction.

Track listing
1. "Satellite Of Love" - 3:40
2. "Wild Child" - 4:37
3. "I Love You" - 2:18
4. "How Do You Think It Feels" - 3:08
5. "New York Telephone Conversation" - 1:32
6. "Walk on the Wild Side" - 4:13
7. "Sweet Jane" (live) - 4:29
8. "White Light/White Heat" (live) - 5:01
9. "Sally Can't Dance" - 2:53
10. "Nowhere At All" - 3:11
11. "Coney Island Baby" - 6:36

Michael Jackson - Invincible (2001)

Imagen

Let's get the clichéd bad joke out of the way to begin with: At the time Michael Jackson released Invincible in the fall of 2001, he hardly seemed "invincible" -- it was more wishful thinking than anything else, since he hadn't really had a genuine hit in ten years, and even that paled in comparison to his total domination of the '80s. That lack of commercial success, combined with a fading reputation as a trailblazer, a truly ugly public scandal, and swirling rumors about his diminishing finances, along with a huge wait between albums (by teaming his Dangerous follow-up with a hits collection, it wound up being overlooked, despite a gaudy publicity push), resulted in Jackson being deep down in the hole, needing to surge back out with a record that not only proved his talents, but his staying power. So, faced with a make-or-break record, what does Jackson do to save his career? What he's done since Dangerous, take a turn toward the street and craft a hard-driving, hard-polished urban soul album, heavy on the dance numbers and sweetened by lugubrious ballads. It's a proven formula for commercial success, but it not only doesn't push his music forward, it makes his reach seem rather timid when compared to the wildly rich, all-encompassing musical vision of Thriller and Bad. Here, he's reined in by a desire to prove himself, so he keeps his focus sharp and narrow, essentially creating a sparkly, post-hip-hop update of Off the Wall. It's not as good as that sounds, because the infectious joy and layered craft of that masterpiece has been replaced with a dogged, near-maniacal desire to craft something hip enough for the clubs and melodic enough for mainstream radio, thereby confirming his self-proclaimed status as the King of Pop (a really terrible title, btw). Since he is exceptionally talented and smart enough to surround himself with first-rate collaborators, this does pay off on occasion, even when it feels a little too calculated or when it feels a little padded. Ultimately, the record runs too long, losing steam halfway through, as it turns to a series of rants about "Privacy" or a deadly stretch of uncomfortably treacly, sub-"Man in the Mirror" songs about "The Lost Children," or when he says that he can't change the world by himself on "Cry." Fortunately, Jackson was clever enough to front-load this record, loading the first seven songs with really good, edgy dance numbers -- even the opening "Unbreakable" isn't sunk by the creepy resurrection of Biggie Smalls -- and lovely ballads, highlighted by "Break of Dawn" and "Butterflies" with its Bacharach-styled horns. Even if these are too self-conscious and a little mechanical (which they are), they still have a spark and sound better than anything Jackson has done since Dangerous. That's not enough to make Invincible the comeback Jackson needed -- he really would have had to have an album that sounded free instead of constrained for that to work -- but it does offer a reminder that he can really craft good pop. If only he was fueled, not constrained, by his obsessions, this could have been really interesting.

Track listing
01. Unbreakable
02. Heartbreaker
03. Invincible
04. Break Of Dawn
05. Heaven Can Wait
06. You Rock My World
07. Butterflies

Siniestro Total - Bailaré sobre tu tumba (1985)

Imagen

Canciones
1. Vámonos al Kwai
2. ¿Qué tal homosexual?
3. Kalahari
4. Al final
5. Demasiado lejos
6. Rock en Samil (Rockaway beach)
7. Bailaré sobre tu tumba
8. Will Power
9. Can't get enough
10. Hey, hey, Vigo
11. Hoy voy a asesinarte (The life and soul of the party)
12. Ye-ye (Ye-ye)
13. Viene el verano (Here comes the summer)
14. Emilio Cao (David Watts)
15. Sexo chungo
16. No me lavo en la vida (In-a-gadda-da-vida)
17. Cada día somos más
18. No me mates con tomate

The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967)

Imagen

Sgt.

Fleetwood Mac - Greatest Hits (1988)

Imagen

Greatest Hits is a 1988 compilation album by British-American band Fleetwood Mac. It covers the period of the band's greatest commercial success, from the mid 1970s to the late 1980s.

It should not be confused with a 1971 release by the Peter Green incarnation of the band, also entitled "Fleetwood Mac Greatest Hits", but containing an entirely different tracklisting. The album in fact omits anything before 1975 including one of their biggest hits "Albatross".

The album has proven to be a major success since the time of its release. Although it only peaked at #14 in the US album chart, it sold steadily and has to date sold in excess of 8 million copies there. In the UK it reached #3 upon release, but has returned several times to the UK album chart - as recently as October 2006 (re-entering at #24).

The album contains two new tracks, "As Long As You Follow" (which was released as a single to promote the album), and "No Questions Asked". The track listing for the US release differs slightly from that of other territories. It includes the 1975 track "Over My Head" but omits the 1987 track "Seven Wonders" (despite it being a top 20 hit in the US) as well as the 1982 track "Oh Diane" (which was never released as a single there at all).

A number of sources state that this album was the last to be commercially released as an 8 track tape by a major label.

Track Listing
1. "Rhiannon" – 4:11
2. "Go Your Own Way" – 3:37
3. "Don't Stop" – 3:11
4. "Gypsy" – 4:22
5. "Everywhere" – 3:41
6. "You Make Loving Fun" – 3:31
7. "Big Love" – 3:38
8. "As Long as You Follow" – 4:11
9. "Say You Love Me" – 4:09
10. "Dreams" – 4:15
11. "Little Lies" – 3:37
12. "Oh Diane" – 2:33
13. "Sara" – 6:25
14. "Tusk" – 3:26
15. "Seven Wonders" – 3:33
16. "Hold Me" – 3:44
17. "No Questions Asked" – 4:41

J.J. Cale - The Road To Escondido (2006)

Imagen

J.J. Cale - The Very Best Of J.J. Cale (1998)

Imagen

With his laconic voice, concise guitar playing, and subtly incisive songwriting, in the early 1970s J.J. Cale was the main architect of what would come to be known as the Tulsa sound, named for his Oklahoma hometown. Cale's laid-back mix of country, blues, and rock & roll was a huge influence on Eric Clapton, who had major hits with Cale songs. Everyone from British rockers Gomez to American jam band Widespread Panic pays homage to Cale's understated style, but it's best experienced on the humble legend's own solo releases, which unfortunately became more sporadic after the reclusive guitar guru went into semi-retirement.

As for the music, this 20-song CD consists of a representative selection of hits for himself ("Crazy Mama" and "Lies" charted early in his career) and his partisans (Clapton scored with "Cocaine" and "After Midnight," while Lynyrd Skynyrd made "Call Me the Breeze" a concert staple).

Track listing
01. Call Me The Breeze
02. Crazy Mama
03. Magnolia
04. After midnight
05. Lies
06. Midnight In Memphis
07. Cajun Moon
08. Rock And Roll Records
09. Cocaine
10. Hey baby
11. I'll Make Love To You Anytime
12. Don't Cry Sister
13. Thirteen Days
14. Sensitive Kind
15. Carry on
16. Mama Don't
17. City Girls
18. Devil In Disguise
19. Don't Wait
20. Money Talks
