Bruce Springsteen - Greatest Hits (2009)

Imagen

01. Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)
02. Born to Run
03. Thunder Road
04. Darkness on the Edge of Town
05. Badlands
06. Hungry Heart
07. Glory Days
08. Dancing in the Dark
09. Born in the USA
10. The Rising
11. Lonesome Day
12. Radio Nowhere

Released as a Wal-Mart exclusive in January 2009 - its exclusivity causing an uproar upon its announcement in late 2008, as plenty of critics thought the pro-union Springsteen should have little to do with Wal-Mart, an argument that ignores plenty of sad corporate realities of the new millennium - Greatest Hits is the third Springsteen hits comp to appear in America and the first to be billed to Bruce & the E Street Band. This designation means that the slim 12-track collection contains nothing from Tunnel of Love through The Ghost of Tom Joad, or Nebraska and Devils & Dust - those were solo Springsteen, one and all. There are also no new tracks and nothing unexpected, just nine big hits from the golden age of classic rock - "Rosalita" through "Born in the U.S.A." - with two cuts from The Rising and "Radio Nowhere" added for good measure. It's not an imaginative collection but it's not bad, either: it's a collection targeted at a general audience, those who would pick it up at a Wal-Mart, nothing more or less. It's so basic and unassuming that it's hard to imagine why anybody would get worked up about it, really.

The Rolling Stones - Singles Collection The London Years (1986)

Imagen

Singles Collection: The London Years is a compilation album of Rolling Stones music released by former manager Allen Klein's ABKCO Records (who usurped control of the band's Decca/London material in 1970) after the band's departure from Decca and Klein.

Released in 1989, Singles Collection: The London Years is a triple album of every Rolling Stones single—and their B-Sides—mostly in their original mono mixes (at least as of the 2002 reissue), in both the UK and US encompassing their entire era with Decca Records in the United Kingdom and London Records in the United States—hence the album's title.

The original collection was produced by Andrew Loog Oldham, and digitally compiled and prepared under his supervision by P. D. Rain and Jody Klein.

With a range from 1963 to 1971, the set begins with their very first UK single, Chuck Berry's "Come On", and runs to Sticky Fingers' "Brown Sugar" and "Wild Horses" (which Allen Klein shares release rights with The Rolling Stones).

The only omissions are four B-sides from 1970 and 1971. "Bitch" and "Let It Rock" (released in the UK on the "Brown Sugar" single) and "Sway" (B-side to "Wild Horses"). Allen Klein did not have release rights to this material when this compilation was released. Also "Natural Magic", a Ry Cooder instrumental, released as the B-side to "Memo from Turner", which features no members of the Rolling Stones performing. These are available on the box set Singles 1968–1971 except "Let It Rock" which is only available on the Rarities 1971–2003 album.

The set was released at a timely juncture, just a couple of weeks before The Rolling Stones' comeback album Steel Wheels was due for release after a significant break, and months following their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Going platinum, the album reached #91 in the US.

In 2007, Steven Van Zandt placed Singles Collection: The London Years #1 on his list of the most essential albums of all time.

In August 2002, Singles Collection: The London Years was issued in a new remastered Compact Disc and SACD digipak by ABKCO Records.

The Rolling Stones - Singles 1968 -1971 [Box set] (2005)

Imagen

Imagen

Singles 1968–1971 is a box set compilation of singles by The Rolling Stones spanning the years 1968 to 1971. The latest in a series of repackages by ABKCO Records, who licence The Rolling Stones' 1963–1970 recorded works, Singles 1968–1971 is the third of three successive volumes to commemorate their non-LP releases during this era.

While the set features faithful replicas of all individual single covers (even the CDs are reproduced in black), the set—and both its predecessors—came under some criticism as to their necessity, especially as 1989's Singles Collection: The London Years already covered this material to satisfaction. Furthermore, the last half of this collection concentrates on post-contractual material from Metamorphosis and the 2003 "Sympathy for the Devil" remixes by The Neptunes. However, Singles 1968–1971 does manage to include a bonus DVD of visual material of four songs that stretch the entire decade of the 1960s.

Disc one
1. Jumpin' Jack Flash
2. Child of the Moon

Disc two
1. Street Fighting Man
2. No Expectations
3. Surprise Surprise
4. Everybody Needs Somebody to Love

Disc three
1. Honky Tonk Women
2. You Can't Always Get What You Want

Disc four
1. Memo from Turner
2. Natural Magic

Disc five
1. Brown Sugar
2. Bitch

Disc six
1. Wild Horses
2. Sway

Disc seven
1. I Don't Know Why
2. Try a Little Harder

Disc eight
1. Out of Time
2. Jiving Sister Fanny

Disc nine
1. Sympathy for the Devil –
2. Sympathy for the Devil (The Neptunes remix)
3. Sympathy for the Devil (Fatboy Slim remix)
4. Sympathy for the Devil (Full Phatt remix)

Bonus DVD
1. Time Is on My Side (Norman Meade) (live on The Ed Sullivan Show)
2. Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow? (live, Fall 1966)
3. Jumpin' Jack Flash (promotional film)

AC/DC - Back In Black (1980)

Imagen

Back in Black is the 7th studio album (in Australia, 6th in the rest of the world) by Australian hard rock band AC/DC, released on 25 July 1980. Back in Black was the first AC/DC album recorded without former lead singer Bon Scott, who had died at the age of 33 on 19 February 1980. The band considered disbanding following Scott's death, but they ultimately decided to continue and shortly thereafter hired Brian Johnson as their new lead singer and lyricist. Producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange, who had previously worked with AC/DC on Highway to Hell, was again brought in to produce. The recordings were done at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas.
The album was remastered and re-released first in late 1994, then again in the Bonfire box set in 1997, and as part of the AC/DC Remasters Series in 2003. In addition, a Dualdisc version was released in 2004, featuring the album in enhanced LPCM Stereo format and the video documentary The Story of Back in Black.
It sold an estimated 49 million copies to date, making it second behind only to Michael Jackson's Thriller as the best-selling album of all-time as well as the best selling album ever released by a band. On 13 December 2007, the RIAA certified it 22× Multi Platinum, recognising sales of 22 million in the United States.

01. Hells Bells
02. Shoot To Thrill
03. What Do You Do For Money Honey
04. Givin' The Dog A Bone
05. Let Me Put My Love Into You
06. Back In Black
07. You Shook Me All Night Long
08. Have A Drink On Me
09. Shake A Leg
10. Rock And Roll Ain't Noise Pollution

Willie Nelson - The Essential Willie Nelson (2003)

Imagen

This is the one to have. Let's face it, all compilations have their weaknesses, but the 2 disc "The Essential Willie Nelson" (2003) is the first to cover all the labels Willie has recorded for and all the big hits in one set! Disc one kicks off with 7 early 60s recordings including "Night life", "Hello Walls", and "Crazy" (which Willie wrote & Patsy Cline made famous). Track 8, "Me and Paul" starts Willie's 70s recordings including "Blue eyes crying in the rain" and of course his classic duets with Waylon: "Good Hearted Woman" & "Mama's don't let your babies...". 3 songs are included from the 1978 album "Stardust": "Blue Skies", "Georgia on my mind", & "All of Me" and disc one closes with two live tracks: "Whiskey River" & "Stay a little longer" both from the '78 album "Willie & Family Live." Disc 2 continues with late 70s and early 80s hits like "My Heroes have always been Cowboys", "Always on my mind", and of course "On the road again". More classic duets follow with "Pancho & Lefty" (a personal favorite) with Merle Haggard, "To all the girls..." with Julio Iglesias, and "Seven Spanish Angels" with Ray Charles. The 1984 gem "Highwayman" featuring Kristofferson, Waylon, and Cash is also here. The second disc is wrapped up with more duets: "Slow Dancing" with U2 (which surprisingly works because Bono is either MIA or extremely toned down), "Mendocino County Line" with Lee Ann Womack, and "One Time too Many" with Aerosmith. One review stated that these last three songs left a "sour taste" considering that they are part of an "essential" collection. I have to agree, but only greatly in terms of the Aerosmith song. It starts off well enough with acoustic guitar and Willie and Steven Tyler trading verses, but when the rest of Aerosmith kicks in and Tyler does his thing, Willie is drowned out and that's not cool on a Willie Nelson compilation. If one wants to hear Aerosmith, there are many ways to do so. So with the minor exception of the final track of the set, this compilation is indispensable. A great way to get Willie's biggest hits on one reasonably priced set!

The Essential Willie Nelson is a two-disc compilation of Willie Nelson songs. This digitally-remastered compilation covers five decades of Nelson's recording career, and is part of Sony's Essential series of compilation albums.

DISC 1: 01. Night Life 02. Hello Walls 03. Crazy 04. Funny How Time Slips Away 05. I Never Cared For You 06. The Party's Over 07. Good Times 08. Me And Paul 09. Shotgun Willie 10. Bloody Mary Morning 11. Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain 12. Good Hearted Woman 13. If You've Got The Money I've Got The Time 14. Uncloudy Day 15. Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys (with Waylon Jennings) 16. Georgia On My Mind 17. Blue Skies 18. All Of Me 19. Heartbreak Hotel (with Leon Russell) 20. Help Me Make It Through The Night 21. Whiskey River (Live) 22. Stay A Little Longer (Live)

DISC 2: 01. My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys 02. Faded Love 03. On The Road Again Willie Nelson 04. Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground 05. Always On My Mind 06. Last Thing I Needed First Thing This Morning 07. Pancho And Lefty 08. To All The Girls I've Loved Before (with Julio Iglesias) 09. City Of New Orleans 10. Seven Spanish Angels (with Ray Charles) 11. Forgiving You Was Easy 12. Highwayman (with Johnny Cash) 13. Living In The Promiseland 14. Nothing I Can Do About It Now 15. Graceland 16. Everywhere I Go (with Emmylou Harris) 17. Slow Dancing (U2 featuring Willie Nelson) 18. Mendocino County Line (with Lee Ann Womack) 19. One Time Too Many (with Steven Tyler and Aerosmith)

The title track from the album, a cover of the Casino Royale standard popularized in the late 1960s by Dusty Springfield and Sergio Mendes, reached number 22 on the adult contemporary chart.

AC/DC - For Those About To Rock (1981)

Imagen

For Those About to Rock We Salute You is the eighth album by Australian hard rock band AC/DC, released in 1981. The album was a follow-up to their highly successful album Back in Black. For Those About to Rock has sold over 4 million copies in the US. It was AC/DC's first and only No. 1 album in the USA until the release of Black Ice in October 2008. In their original 1981 review, Rolling Stone magazine declared it to be their best album.

The album was the third and final produced for the band by Robert John "Mutt" Lange.

The name of the album was inspired by a book Angus Young read, entitled For Those About To Die, We Salute You, about Roman gladiators. The gladiators' final words to the emperor were "Ave Caesar morituri te salutant" - or, "Hail Caesar, we who are about to die, salute you." The album was re-released in 2003 as part of the AC/DC Remasters series.

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - Live Alive (1986)

Imagen

Live Alive is an electric blues album compiled from four live performances by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. The performances were recorded on July 16, 1985 at the Montreux Jazz Festival; July 17-18, 1986 at the Austin Opera House; and July 19, 1986 at Dallas Starfest. Much of the album was overdubbed in the studio.

The 1985 Montreux performance was much better received than the 1982 visit, during which some of the crowd booed Vaughan's hard blues sound. The song selection for Live Alive displays many of SRV's biggest influences: Jimi Hendrix ("Voodoo Child (Slight Return)"), Stevie Wonder ("Superstition"), Howlin' Wolf ("Commit a Crime"), and Buddy Guy ("Mary Had a Little Lamb").

Track listing
All songs were written by Stevie Ray Vaughan, except where noted.
1. "Say What!" – 4:51
2. "Ain't Gone 'n' Give Up on Love" – 6:24
3. "Pride and Joy" – 5:04
4. "Mary Had a Little Lamb" (Buddy Guy) – 4:15
5. "Superstition" (Stevie Wonder) – 4:43
6. "I'm Leaving You (Commit a Crime)" (Chester Burnett) – 5:35
7. "Cold Shot" (W. C. Clark, Michael Kindred)" – 5:40
8. "Willie the Wimp" (Bill Carter, Ruth Ellsworth) – 4:38
9. "Look at Little Sister" (Hank Ballard) – 4:13
10. "Texas Flood" (Joseph Wade Scott, Larry C. Davis) – 6:30

12. "Love Struck Baby" – 3:46
13. "Change It" (Doyle Bramhall) – 5:04

Willy DeVille - Willy DeVille Live (1993)

Imagen

Willy DeVille (August 27, 1950 - August 6, 2009) was an American singer and songwriter. First with his band Mink DeVille (1974–1985) and later on his own, DeVille in his 35-year career created songs that are wholly original yet rooted in traditional American musical styles. DeVille worked with collaborators from across the spectrum of contemporary music.
"Willy DeVille Live" is a live recording of Willy DeVille and the Mink DeVille Band. The recordings were made in June 16-17, 1993 at the Bottom Line in Greenwich Village, New York, and in October, 1993 at the Olympia Theatre in Paris. Willy DeVille Live was not released in the United States. According to Eagle Rock Entertainment, "The soul-chorus/brass mixture with its impressive orchestration assured the album the number one sales chart position in Spain." The album was dedicated to Steve Douglas, who played saxophone on the first three Mink DeVille albums and produced Le Chat Bleu. Douglas died shortly before the album came out.

Track listing

Cat Stevens - Box Set (2001)

Imagen

Completists will be happy to own many of the rarities on this four-disc set, including Stevens's first demo session, an unreleased 1970 duet with Elton John, a cover of Fats Domino's "Blue Monday," and several choice live cuts from the late '70s. And it's nice to have an overview of the artist's entire career - from late '60s pop-star wannabe to '70s folk-rock superstar - in one place. But the difference between early Cat Stevens (despite composing hits for others) and "post-Tea for the Tillerman" Stevens is substantial. The two follow-up LPs were part of a trilogy of brilliance - both musically and lyrically - and any Stevens collection must start there. Nevertheless, surprises and some gems are to be found throughout all four discs - even his most recent recording (as Yusuf Islam) isn't bad. This box set also offers a choice opportunity to reassess a deserving career.

Recorded between 1965 and 1997.

Mark Knopfler - Get Lucky (2009)

Imagen

Mark Knopfler’s upcoming album Get Lucky is scheduled to be released on September 15.

01. Border Reiver
02. Hard Shoulder
03. You Can't Beat The House
04. Before Gas And TV
05. Monteleone
06. Cleaning My Gun
07. The Car Was The One
08. Remembrance Day
09. Get Lucky
10. So Far From The Clyde
11. Piper To The End

The autobiographical thread running through Get Lucky is exemplified by the title track. “The first itinerant person I ever met would sing in soul bands in winter, then work part-time in fairgrounds or ‘go pick fruit down south’ when the weather turned warm,” explains Knopfler. “I was about 15 years old, stuck in school and envious. ‘Get Lucky’ came from him and other traveling characters I went on to meet in places I’d find myself working short-term, like farms, warehouses, building sites, before I got lucky with my songs.”
