JERRY LEE LEWIS - Last Man Standing (2006)

Imagen

How do you drum up interest in a Jerry Lee Lewis record, since the Ferriday Fireball is 71 and hasn't put out an album since 1996? First, you pair him with 22 of the biggest stars of rock (Mick Jagger, Keith Richards), country (Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard), and blues (Buddy Guy, B.B. King), to show how he put his stamp on nearly every genre. Then, you hire the dean of music chroniclers, Peter Guralnick, to give the liner notes heft. And--oh, yes, you also make sure the piano-pounding pioneer displays the best finger form he's shown in 25 years. Throughout, the Killer crows, struts, and self-mythologizes with the brio of youth, and who could resist him? At times, one may question the wisdom of turning an obvious guitar tune (Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll") into a piano-dominated performance, just as it seems odd to not make the best use of such guests as Toby Keith or Delaney Bramlett. But Lewis never yields the throne for a second, even surrounded by the likes of Robbie Robertson, Neil Young, and Eric Clapton. For that reason, most of these aren't true duets--the star instrumentalists take their solos, and the harmonies of some of the most legendary vocalists (Don Henley, Little Richard) stay too far in the background. But when things really work--as they do with Bruce Springsteen (the rave-up "Pink Cadillac"), Neil Young (a crackling rendition of "You Don't Have To Go"), Kid Rock (an even blacker "Honky Tonk Woman"), George Jones (the novelty-framed "Don't Be Ashamed of Your Age"), and Kris Kristofferson (an especially poignant take on "The Pilgrim: Chapter 33"), the rock of ages cleaves for thee and me. Last Man Standing refers to the famous cover of Million Dollar Quartet, on which he's pictured with fellow Sun artists Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins, all now jamming in the great beyond. Yet in a spoken-word reprise at the end of the Kristofferson song--"From the rocking of the cradle / To the rolling of the hearse / The going up was worth the coming down" - The Last Man seems to suggest his own fine epitaph. It's hard to argue with a hellraiser extraordinaire. - amazon.com

01. Rock and Roll - Jerry Lee Lewis, Jimmy Page
02. Before the Night Is Over - B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis
03. Pink Cadillac - Jerry Lee Lewis, Bruce Springsteen
04. Evening Gown - Mick Jagger, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ronnie Wood
05. You Don't Have to Go - Jerry Lee Lewis, Neil Young
06. Twilight - Jerry Lee Lewis, Robbie Robertson
07. Travelin' Band - John Fogerty, Jerry Lee Lewis
08. That Kind of Fool - Jerry Lee Lewis, Keith Richards
09. Sweet Little Sixteen - Jerry Lee Lewis, Ringo Starr
10. Just a Bummin' Around - Merle Haggard, Jerry Lee Lewis
11. Honky Tonk Woman - Kid Rock, Jerry Lee Lewis
12. What's Made Milwaukee Famous - Jerry Lee Lewis, Rod Stewart
13. Don't Be Ashamed of Your Age - George Jones, Jerry Lee Lewis
14. Couple More Years - Jerry Lee Lewis, Willie Nelson
15. Ol' Glory - Toby Keith, Jerry Lee Lewis
16. Trouble in Mind - Eric Clapton, Jerry Lee Lewis
17. I Saw Her Standing There - Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard
18. Lost Highway - Delaney Bramlett, Jerry Lee Lewis
19. Hadacol Boogie - Buddy Guy, Jerry Lee Lewis
20. What Makes the Irish Heart Beat - Don Henley, Jerry Lee Lewis

The title of the album refers to the fact that Lewis is the last of the Sun Records greats (Orbison, Cash, Presley) still walking the earth, let alone making music. That’s the real beauty of Last Man Standing: not only is Jerry Lee Lewis still standing, he’s still making music that means something. He’s proving that he can be as vital over 70 as he was 20, or even 40, years ago. Don’t bet against the man they call the Killer.

CHUCK BERRY - You Never Can Tell: His Complete Chess 1960-1966 (2009)

Imagen

The accepted mythology is that Chuck Berry was the only one of rock's greats to make it through the supposed drought of 1960-1964 with his career and his creativity intact. Jerry Lee wound up a country act, Elvis became a b-grade movie star, Little Richard never regained his momentum even after he reconciled with rock, and many others were, well, were dead. Chuck himself had spent two years in the jug for carting a 14-year-old across state lines to be a "hat check girl" (she was later caught whoring), so it was impressive that Chuck still made music at all, much less regained the charts with classics like "Nadine," "No Particular Place To Go," and "You Never Can Tell." Indeed, those singles rank with his best. Yet the truth made clear by this 4-CD set, the sequel to a "complete '50s" collection by Hip-O, is that Berry had already begun to flag in 1960 and 1961, before his troubles; the two albums he made during this time find him alternately rewriting his classic hits ("Sweet Sixteen"), retreating into standard St. Louis blues ("Driftin' Blues"), and searching for that elusive pop hit ("Diploma For Two"). Solid stuff by anyone's standards but Chuck's, in other words. Upon his release, however, he entered a 18-month period of creativity where most of his later classics were born, and it's this burst that the timeline nature of this set brings out. This set might be only necessary for collectors were it not for a full live album (planned, never issued) that's easily the hottest Chuck-in-concert ever waxed; another entire album of extended guitar jams between Berry and Bo Diddley, and those great singles, which reveal some excellent discoveries (the instrumental b-side "O Rangutang," covers of "Fraulein" and "The Things That I Used To Do"), all of which underscore Chuck's brief yet potent return. A mythbuster, yes, but an entertaining one.

CROWDED HOUSE - Recurring Dream - The Very Best of Crowded House (1996)

Imagen

Crowded House is a rock group formed in Melbourne, Australia and led by New Zealand musician and singer-songwriter Neil Finn. Finn is widely recognised as the primary songwriter and creative direction of the band, having led it through several incarnations, drawing members from New Zealand (himself, Tim Finn and Eddie Rayner), Australia (Paul Hester, Nick Seymour, Peter Jones and Craig Hooper) and the United States (Mark Hart, and Matt Sherrod). Though the band owes its original success to the Australian live music scene, references to New Zealand people and places in songs pay homage to their roots ("Kare Kare" is written about Karekare Beach, "Mean to Me" refers to Finn's hometown of Te Awamutu). The success of the group's third album Woodface and the general success of Crowded House and Split Enz prompted the Queen in June 1993 to bestow the Order of the British Empire on both Tim and Neil Finn for their contribution to the music of New Zealand. Originally active between 1984 and 1996, the band's notable hits from this period include "Don't Dream It's Over", "Something So Strong", "Better Be Home Soon", "Now We're Getting Somewhere", "Into Temptation", "Fall at Your Feet" and "Weather with You". In 2007, the group reunited with a new drummer. In this period, the group has released one album, Time on Earth, which reached #1 on Australia's ARIA Albums Chart.

Diana Krall - Quiet Nights (2009)

Imagen

Quiet Nights is the tenth studio album (twelfth overall) by Canadian jazz singer–songwriter and pianist Diana Krall, released on March 31, 2009 by Verve Records. The album marks Krall's first work with arranger Claus Ogerman since 2002's Live in Paris, and her first studio work with Ogerman since 2001's The Look of Love.

The album's title comes from the English-language title of the bossa nova standard "Corcovado", written by Antonio Carlos Jobim and first made popular in the early 1960s. The title track is one of three selections written or co-written by Jobim. Krall had previously included the Jobim-written "How Insensitive" ("Insensatez") on her 2006 release From This Moment On, and performed Jobim's "The Boy from Ipanema" with Rosemary Clooney on Clooney's 2000 album Brazil.

The album peaked at number two on the Canadian Albums Chart—after debuting at number three—, and debuted at number three on the U.S. Billboard 200 with 104,000 units sold in its opening week.[2] In mainland Europe it reached the top spot in Portugal, Hungary, and Poland and charted inside the top five in France, Austria, Spain, Greece, Norway, and Estonia, as well as on the pan-European chart. Quiet Nights also debuted on the New Zealand RIANZ chart at number two.

Leonard Cohen - Live In London (2009)

Imagen

For over four decades, Leonard Cohen has been one of the most important and influential songwriters of our time, a figure whose body of work achieves greater depths of mystery and meaning as time goes on. His songs have set a virtually unmatched standard in their seriousness and range. Sex, spirituality, religion, power - he has relentlessly examined the largest issues in human lives, always with a full appreciation of how elusive answers can be to the vexing questions he raises. But those questions, and the journey he has traveled in seeking to address them, are the ever-shifting substance of his work, as well as the reasons why his songs never lose their overwhelming emotional force. Documentaries, awards, tribute albums and the ongoing march of artists eager to record his songs all acknowledge the peerless contribution Cohen has made to what one of his titles aptly calls "The Tower of Song." In 2008 Leonard Cohen embarked on his first tour in 15 years. The Live In London release fully captures and recreates the extraordinary show from that tour that earned Cohen more than 80 five-star reviews for his performances.

Wings - Wings Greatest (1978)

Imagen

01. Another Day
02. Silly Love Songs
03. Live And Let Die
04. Junior's Farm
05. With A Little Luck
06. Band On The Run
07. Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey
08. Hi Hi Hi
09. Let 'Em In
10. My Love
11. Jet
12. Mull Of Kintyre

Paul McCartney might not have been the coolest or most cosmic ex-Beatle, but none of his former bandmates could touch his knack for creating perfect pop singles. Say what you will about their "lack of depth," but the 12 songs on Wings Greatest considerably brightened AM radio playlists during the 1970s, and most of them have actually improved with age. Wings' pure rock power is ably represented by "Band on the Run," "Hi Hi Hi," "Jet," "Live and Let Die" and the underrated non-LP single "Junior's Farm," all of which positively explode from the speakers. Paul's gooey streak shows up on "My Love," "Silly Love Songs," and the bagpipe-infused "Mull of Kintyre," but only "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" still contains a high cringe quotient. Some key tracks are missing-most notably "Maybe I'm Amazed" and "Venus and Mars/Rock Show"-but Wings Greatest is still a thrilling document of Macca at the peak of his pop abilities.
