Villa has been nominated for the Ballon d'Or again, which is pretty cool. He's one of 30 nominated. I don't think they should have bothered with nominating so many this year as the Ballon d'Or is Messi's to lose. If you google the Guardian UK and ballon d'or they seem to think CRonaldo is the front runner, but I don't see how anyone can trump the Messi-Barça triple of last season.
What would your top three look like? And finally, which players do you think should have been on the list?
I'd answer as follows:
First: Messi - for obvious reasons.
Second: Gourcouff - for being the key player at Bourdeux that ended Lyon's reign of terror at the top of the table. (I wish we had him)
Third: Eden Dzeko - helped carry Wolfsburg to an unexpected Bundesliga crown.
Players who should have been on the list: Ibrahim Afellay, PSV (career year), Luis Suarez (Ajax), and Steven Defour (Standard Liege). To make room for them I would drop Drogba, Arshavin, and Kaka (great player, but he had a bit of an off year).
I think though Villa had a good season, Valencia did not do enough, i.e. secure a Champions League spot or win a title, for him to even make it into the top five. Hell, Forlan was a man possessed at the end of last season and single handedly dragged Patetico into a CL spot. Therefore, Forlan deserves it more than Villa does.
